Roe Deer

Capreolus Capreolus

Roe Deer have been living in Estonian territory about 10,000 years. They are the most numerous ungulates here. Today, the Roe deer population is very high, which has caused the incredible increase of other species in the area, such as the lynx and wolf. Breeding season is during the second half of July and the first half of August. The gestation period lasts about 9 months and one to two cubs are usually born in May and June. An adult Roe buck weighs about 30 kg. Given the weather conditions, the natural mortality rate tends to be quite high, and a harsh winter may decrease the population by up to 30%. Read more

Description

Roe Deer can be hunted from June first to January 31st. Buck is hunted from the first of June, while doe and kid from the first of September. The best time to harvest good trophy buck is during the breeding season: 1) starting from the second half of July to the tenth of August, or 2) in the first half of June (when the layer of grass has not yet grown too high). Hunting is done by stalking or from a tree stand. Every year, more than 25,000 Roe deers are hunted in Estonia. The hunt is conducted at sunrise and sunset, so guests will have the chance during the rest of the day to choose between touristic offers like the Lahemaa National Park (which has several manors) or small fishing villages along the northern shore of the Gulf of Finland.
