Roe Deer

Hunting period: June 1 to December 31

Roe Deer (Capreolus Capreolus)

Roe Deer has been living in Estonian territory about 10.000 year. Today, Roe Deer population is very high, which has provoked the incredible increase of other species such as the lynx and the wolf.

The breeding season is during the second half of July and the first half of August. Gestation period lasts about 9 months and 1-2 cubs are usually born in May and June. An adult roebuck weights about 30 kg. Given the weather conditions, the natural mortality rate tends to be quite high; a harsh winter may decrease a population by 30%.

Roe Deer hunting

Roe Deer may be hunted using “waylay”, “calling”, or “stalking” method. Roe Deer is hunted from the 1st of June to December 31.

The best time to hunt roebuck is when the layer of grass has not yet grown too high.

In 2017 more than 11.000 roe bucks were hunted.
